在美国大萧条事件，人民失业且无车，1937年，美国14个州通过了法律把竖起“大拇指”的手势赋予搭便车（预先对愿意搭载你的人表示感谢）。到了大概1950年，超过一半的州加入这一行动， 逐渐的搭便车成为美国人的一部分，很多人继续坚持竖起自己的大拇指。到了后来逐步传到国内，渐渐传入西藏等地区。

这里的gloves指拳击手套，the gloves are off 指双方要开始干仗了。

本来Rachel是站在Phoebe一条战线上的（she thinks phoebe's chewing hair is endearing），没想到Pheobe“恩将仇报”的讽刺了她一回，Rachel觉得被出卖了，所以说了这句话。
