The people in the first group were musicians, while those in thesecond group had nomusical training.Themusicians were able to hear the talking person moreclearly.

Musicianshear better, saysstudy leader Nina Kraus, because they learn to pay attention tocertain sounds. Thinkabout violinists in an orchestra. When the violinists play with the group, they hear her own instrument and many others, too,But the violinists mustlisten closelytowhatthey are playing, and ignorethe other sounds. In this way, musicians areableto concentrate oncertain sounds, even in a room with lots of noise.

Musicand Speech

Why does thiswork? Schlaug isn't sure. Music seems to activatedifferent parts of thebrain, includingthe damaged parts.Thissomehow helps patients use thoseparts of the brain again.

Understandingthe results
