All around the world, many teenagers choose to do some paid part-time work in their free time.In wider society,there is the debate over whether this practice should be encouraged or not.

Obviously for teenagers, there are some important advantages to having a part time job. With the money they earn, teenagers are able to purchase what they want, and this is especially helpful if their parents are not willing or able to pay for it.Having a job also helps teenagers learn to effectively manage moneyand understand personal finance.Even if they are simply using their earnings to cover their own expenses, they will learn to budget betweenclothes,movies, sports gear, car expenses,etc. In addition, teen employment helps teenagers transition from youth to adulthood, teaching them many skills that will be extremely helpful to them in their future lives. When doing a job, teenagers meet new people and engage in new experiences. They have opportunities to develop a good work ethic,improve communication skills,and become better at time management.This will hugely enhance their employabilityin the future when they are looking for a more permanent and professional occupation.

While there are perks toworking when in secondary school, there are also some drawbacks and it is clearly not going to work for all teens. Doing a part-time job can bea distraction from teenagers’ academics, and balancing work and school canprove to be very stressful for many students. For example, working students may not have the time to complete all assigned homework, and the part-time job may place constraints ontheir sleep time. Fatigue or lack of preparation for the next day's classes may discourage a working teen from going to school, therefore possibly leading to higher rates of absenteeismand less participation in extracurricular activitiesat school such as sports. Also, depending on thematuritylevel of the teenager and the type of part-time job obtained,early entry into a harsh or less than ideal work environment may lead to negative attitude towards working. This can have an adverse effect on their career development in the future.

Personally,Itend to think that teen employment brings more benefits than problems. However, I believe teenagers should have the right to decide whether or not to have a part-time job. Parents need to offer advice and try to make sure that their children getthe work-study balance right.
